Useful Information Regarding Herniated Disc

By Eric Fox

The spinal cord is a very significant part of the human body. The spinal cord contains nerve cells that run all the way to the brain. It comes together with the brain forming the central nervous system. This enables processing of information by the brain that result to movement of arms, legs, waist, and other parts of the body from one place to another.

The spinal cord is only functional whenever it is in good condition. Injury causes widespread dysfunction of the whole system. Various conditions can be caused when the spinal cord is injured, including herniated disc. This condition is caused by automobile accidents majorly, but there are other causes too. Automobile accidents put too much pressure on the spine, causing the discs it contains to move.

The structure that holds the spine is called the spinal disc. They also act as shock absorbers in case there is an accident. The pressure put on the spinal cord during vehicle collision, forces the disc to move out of place. This means that there will be absence of shock absorbers hence causing spinal injury. This is what causes herniation of spine discs.

An individual suffering from this condition has recurrent back, neck or leg pain. This comes as a result of difference in the normal organization of the spinal cord which is affected or weakened during the accident. This prevents it from performing its duties effectively. When the disc is dislocated from position, it leads to creation of protrusion in the outer ring of the spine thus causing discomfort and pain.

Herniation of discs happens at the lower region of the back. Chances of getting affected b y the condition are high in old people compared to young people. This is due to the natural aging of the spine. The disc of young people has high water level. The discs will begin to dry out as they get old. They will weaken and therefore they will become prone to wear and tear.

Other factors apart from aging include, gender men are more prone to the problem compared to women. Lifting heavy objects using your back muscles twists ones back making if susceptible to this condition. Weight issue also may cause this hernia due to the stress put on the discs at the lower back. People need to avoid frequent driving and or sitting down for long hours and opt for walking instead.

To determine whether one has the problem or not one has to get a full physical body examination by a doctor. Having frequent back pain, leg or foot pain, weakness in legs or tingling sensation may indicative of hernia. So if one registers this symptom they need to seek quick medical advice.

Prevention and treatment of the condition can be done in early stages. Non-surgical treatments such as bed rest can help. Prescription by a doctor is also another way of preventing the problem. One might be given anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain. Physical therapy, involving specific exercises to help in strengthening of the lower back can also help. Proper eating and engaging in regular exercises act as preventive measures.
