Signs Of Cavachon Breeders With Responsible Practices

By Sandra Lewis

Cavachons are a highly desired designer dog that is neither very common or easy to find as breeding them is not an easy task. They must either be a mix of a purebred Bichon Frise with a full blooded Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or two perfectly mixed first generation offspring from unrelated litters. As these pups generally come at a premium price, it is important to only use high quality Cavachon breeders who exhibit certain key traits.

The AKC does not officially recognize this breed as it is actually a hybrid, so there is no officially recommended list of reliable providers. The best recommendations generally tend to come from other people who choose to own Cavachons. Regardless, there are certain factors that can make a breeder of higher quality than others.

Viewing a website is not an accurate way to determine the quality of a breeder. In fact, the most reliable way to do this would be to physically visit the location to tour the facility. In this way questions can be posed in person, and one can get a personal perspective on how the animals are cared for, socialized, bred, fed, and housed.

A very important point is that the facility only deals in the breeding on one breed and is not constantly producing litters. If they do either of these, the location could possibly be a puppy farm which means the animals may not be healthy. Females are not meant to be constantly pregnant and should be of appropriate age.

Prospective owners need to pay attention to the cleanliness of the facility. This means that all waste and feces are removed, that the dogs have proper bedding, are well groomed, healthy, happy, and adequately socialized. They should be provided with ample opportunity and space to play and exercise, and not spend the majority of their time locked in a cage or small confined space.

A respectable breeder will provide a health guarantee on each pup. Every breed has conditions that they are prone to, however each puppy should be checked by a vet and warranted against any undetected genetic defects which may later manifest. If the cost includes procedures like deworming and vaccinations, new owners would be advised to request those records.

A breeder who is truly dedicated to their craft is going to be equally concerned about who will be adopting their puppies. They will make sure to go over breed expectations, behavioral characteristics, grooming and attention needs, spaying and neutering, as well as socialization and obedience training. They want to know what type of living conditions the prospective owners have and whether or not there are other pets or small children in the home, as these could be concerns for these dogs.

It will greatly benefit a prospective owner to demand copies of each parent dog's lineage papers as verification of their pure bloodlines. They should also take the initiative to learn all they can about the breed beforehand to feel confident that the animal's characteristics will be compatible with the way the person lives. It is most important that anyone thinking of buying a puppy feel comfortable asking any and all questions that they might have.
